What Are Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are a reddish brown colour and have a flat overall shaped body and are usually about 5 mm. They are nocturnal, wingless insects that belong to the family of Cimicidae. After feeding their colour changes where they will appear to be a dark red to black colour. Females can deposit one to five eggs a day, and may lay 200 to 500 eggs in a lifetime, which are difficult to spot as they are white and stick to the surfaces. Under normal room temperatures and with an adequate food supply, they can live over 300 days. Bed bugs also tend to stay close together and have a distinctively sweet, yet unpleasant smell.

Bed bugs are automatically associated in society with being dirty and unclean. This is not the case, bed bugs are not prejudiced and will attach themselves to any soft furnishing item especially bed linen and mattresses. Bed bugs will attach themselves to clothing, cleaning equipment and luggage and then can be transported to other bedrooms or your own home and infest your furnishings.

Bed bugs feed by injecting a small amount of saliva into the skin and in most cases this isn’t serious and does not hurt, however they obviously become an annoyance due to irritation.

How To Spot Bed Bugs

The most common signs of bed bugs are blood spots on the sheets and mattress from where the bugs have been feeding or have been squashed. Another indication of bed bug infestation are brown spots, particularly on your bedding, from their feces  Also if you are itching and scratching and can see many raised red bumps then this is a typical sign of a bed bug bite, they can take up to nine days to become visible.

Checking For Bed Bugs

Check to make sure that there are no signs of bed bugs infestation particularly in the bedding, mattress and bedstead. Check cracks and crevices including mattress seams, sheets, furniture, behind baseboards, electrical outlet plates and picture frames for tiny blood (red and rust colored) and feces (brown and black) spots. They easily travel from room to room with staff and in visitors’ luggage so check immediate bedrooms and public areas that might have been visited. This should be done carefully to avoid further contamination by the inspector, logging all possible sightings. Typically, they come out at night to feed, but during the day, they are most likely found within a 5-foot radius of the bed. Any cleaning equipment used by the room attendants, along with their overalls, should be kept in any contaminated room as the infestation is realized to avoid contamination into clean areas.

Bed Bugs Chemicals

We apply a specially formulated bed bugs chemical that not only completely kills the bed bugs but also penetrates the shell and kills the eggs. This allows us to eradicate the problem in one visit. We don’t use heat treatment due to potential damage of furnishings or structures and the chemical we propose to use is a one treatment method rather than revisiting to kill newly hatched eggs like other products on the market. This is a reasonably new chemical to the market and although highly effective against bed bugs it is completely safe for humans and animals once dried.

Once treated, we remove our protective suits and boot covers and seal them in bags, spraying the outsides of the coverings to minimise any risk of contamination to other areas. We will then repeat this process to rooms opposite and rooms to the side. If there is chance of infestation vertically, through wooden floor/ceilings or services risers etc we will repeat the process in these areas also.

We would then return the following day to check are work and finish vacuuming.
